regulator of the U.S. telecommunications industry is considering allowing the use of mobile phones on planes, “launching a debate that pits the technically possible to socially tolerable,” writes the American newspaper Wall Street Journal.

According to the newspaper, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a powerful telecoms regulator is studying the possibility of allowing mobile phones and data transmissions are performed after the plane reaches cruising altitude , keeping, however, the prohibition of using the devices during takeoff and landing.

The possibility is not mandatory, leaving the last word to the airlines themselves, who have said they would consider the idea “with caution” due to the perceived cost of installing the equipment that communicates with the towers on the ground but also with their own opinion of the passengers, saying that companies oppose the possibility to make calls during flights.
