New scientific studies indicate that the Earth may be a single mother of Moon Last year, two studies have challenged the accepted theory, that a gigantic collision between Earth and an object the size of Mars would have given rise to the moon there 4.5 billion years. The name “Father” would be supposed Theia. But the chemical analysis of lunar samples collected during the Apollo mission in 1970, indicated that the material from which the Moon is made of Earth just came.

Lunar Ice

In the middle of last year, after analyzing images obtained by the Moon Lunar Orbiter Reconnaissence, NASA, a group of researchers stated that there could be ice on the surface of Shackleton crater, near the south pole of Earth’s natural satellite. Due to glare inside the crater, the researchers estimated that it could be composed of up to 22% ice. Months later, NASA researchers reinforced the hypothesis of ice in the crater, but fell to an estimated 10%. Shackleton crater is considered by the American space agency as a candidate to run in future lunar base, subject to confirmation of the presence of ice.

Sinking of the Titanic

According to an American survey, a rare alignment of the Sun and Moon, four months before the accident that killed over 1,500 people, would have given off a large number of icebergs that eventually joining the transatlantic route. The alignment between the two stars would have strengthened the gravitational attraction, producing extremely high tides. Thus, astronomers concluded that the unusually high tide January 1912 would desencalhado icebergs of Greenland, turning southward by ocean currents, having enough to reach the shipping lanes of the Titanic time.

This phenomenon could explain the bumpy surface and the differences between the two sides of the satellite. The clear face, facing the earth has a relatively smooth and flat surface. Have the dark, which can not be spotted from Earth, has mountains reaching 3,000 meters high and deep craters. The hypothesis is waiting for new evidence to be confirmed.

Planting vegetables

ambitious space program of China intends, among other projects, take a manned mission to the moon in the future – something that, until now, was only done by the United States. One of the studies that are being developed for this purpose includes growing vegetables in space. In an experiment conducted in Beijing, four different types of vegetables grown in a cabin of 300 cubic meters, whose goal is to allow astronauts to produce their own reservations for air, water and food during missions. According to Chinese space agency, the system was built in 2011, uses plants and algae and should be used in bases on the Moon or Mars.

Mystery of boeral aurora

NASA launched in September this year the Explorer probe Lunar Atmosphere and Dust (Ladee, its acronym in English) trying to solve a mystery that Lunar has spanned more than 40 years. In the last manned expedition to the Moon, Apollo 17 astronauts reported seeing a glow on the lunar horizon just before sunrise, similar to the aurora borealis. The phenomenon outlined in the tender Eugene Cernan (picture above), mission commander, surprised scientists, since the Moon does not have a thick enough atmosphere to reflect sunlight in this way. The probe will test the theory elaborated by scientists according to which the mysterious phenomenon is the effect of lunar dust, electrically charged matter.

A survey of this year found that the water of the Moon has the same origin as the present on Earth. Both have been brought by small meteorites called chondrites carbonácios, which hit the region about 100 million years after the formation of the Solar System. The researchers came to this conclusion after analyzing the chemical composition of lunar rocks collected during the Apollo missions 15:17, conducted in the early 1970s, and realize that it was similar to the water found on Earth and in meteorites.

famous phenomenon known as a blue moon has nothing to do with the color of the TV – and even is considered an astronomical event. A Blue Moon occurs every two years and seven months, and just means the occurrence of a second full moon in one month. It happens for a lack of synchrony between the lunar calendar and the Gregorian, adopted in most of the world. While the timing of phases of the moon lasts 29.5 days, Gregorian months have 30 or 31 days – with the exception of February. This difference causes the phenomenon of days.

Studies showed that the Moon is shrinking and its crust, stretching. The shrinking of the star is due to cooling of the core. According to studies, since its formation, the distance between the center of the satellite and its surface decreased approximately 91 meters, equivalent to the length of a football field. Images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter also showed that in some regions, the crust of the Moon is separating.
